About pganalyze

At pganalyze, we optimize the performance of Postgres databases and ensure that the most important component of a development stack - the database - works fast and reliably. Our product helps customers such as Atlassian, Robinhood and DoorDash to understand complex Postgres problems and performance issues.

pganalyze enables data platform teams to scale their Postgres expertise to support hundreds of application developers, and deliver fast end-user experiences. Application developers use pganalyze to get deep insights into complex database behaviors. The pganalyze product offers automated analysis and custom visualizations, and makes automatic recommendations, such as suggesting the best index to create for a slow query.

Our company is bootstrapped and profitable, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area. We work fully remote, with team members based across the US and Canada. We emphasize autonomy and focus time by having few meetings per week.

We welcome people of different backgrounds, abilities, experiences and perspectives. Having a work environment that is diverse, inclusive and focuses on learning from one another is central to how we operate. Working together is a form of community, and we care about the shared spaces being safe and supportive.

About the role

We are looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Head of Marketing to expand pganalyze’s marketing capabilities as we scale our business. Today pganalyze is viewed as an authoritative thought leader in the Postgres community. We have an excellent brand and content marketing engine that educates developers and database professionals on Postgres best practices. Our practitioner focused content marketing efforts to date have given us an engaged audience of over 20,000 newsletter subscribers, strong recurring website and blog visits from search engine traffic, and a growing YouTube channel, fueled by the popular weekly video series “5mins of Postgres”.

Going forward, we are looking for our Head of Marketing to lead improvements to our messaging and engagement with technology leaders. We expect you to work hands on with our CEO and Head of Sales to craft positioning, create product focused content, and drive campaigns that connect the dots between performant databases and successful technology organizations. Said plainly, database practitioners and application developers love our product, and we need you to help us tell a story to technology leaders about our product’s business value.

Starting out, we expect you to personally work on our Marketing efforts, and over time, we expect you to grow the Marketing organization into a small, efficient team and to drive the overall Marketing strategy for the company. You will be provided with a budget to outsource projects to dedicated team members or external consultants (e.g. PPC, website design, etc.). We value automation where it makes sense and expect you to enable efficiency where there is opportunity for it.

At pganalyze you will:

  • Develop and execute the strategy and tactics for marketing pganalyze to engineering leadership
  • Continue to iterate and improve on our successful practitioner focused content marketing efforts
  • Manage the inbound funnel progression from top-of-the-funnel to bottom-of-the-funnel
  • Work closely together with our CEO & Head of Sales to define the user journey
  • Review and refine our positioning and messaging
  • Monitor and report on Marketing performance through analytics in tools like HubSpot
  • Have an excellent understanding of the competitive landscape
  • Be able to understand high-level technical problems our customers face in their day-to-day and know when to defer to other team members
  • Be the point-contact for relationships with newsletter curators, event hosts, and partner companies

Previously, you have:

  • Worked in a small early-stage team where everyone wore multiple hats
  • Held a Marketing leadership / director role in a business that sold SaaS products for software developers
  • Had direct expertise in product marketing
  • Used Marketing tools like HubSpot, ahrefs, Google Search Console and Google Analytics
  • Defined positioning and messaging for a software developer product

Optionally, you also have:

  • Experience in the database space
  • Built out a Marketing organization
  • Worked in an Sales/Marketing organization that followed a land-and-expand strategy
  • Experience in setting up and managing ad campaigns on Google Adwords and LinkedIn
  • Run customer/account satisfaction surveys
  • Experience with setting up Partnership Marketing
  • Marketed products that had a self-service purchasing experience for business customers
  • Worked closely together with a Sales leader to define Marketing and Sales campaigns
  • Experience working on Git Platforms like GitHub and know your way around GitHub issues, pull requests, and others.
